Akor Adams reflects on Sevilla defeat

Sevilla’s struggles in La Liga deepened on Sunday after a narrow 1–0 defeat to Real Oviedo, a result that has intensified the pressure on the Andalusian club as they continue their fight to avoid relegation.

For Nigerian striker Akor Adams, the result was especially disappointing as it came during a crucial moment of transition for the team.

The match marked the beginning of a new era under head coach Luis García Plaza, who was appointed to steady a team that has been battling inconsistency and poor form. Expectations were high that the change in leadership would spark an immediate response, but instead, Sevilla were left frustrated after failing to make the desired impact.

The turning point came in the first half when Sevilla were reduced to ten men following a red card. The numerical disadvantage disrupted their rhythm and forced them to abandon their planned approach, leaving them vulnerable against a determined Oviedo side. Sensing their opportunity, the visitors pressed forward, and it was Federico Viñas who delivered the decisive blow, scoring the only goal of the match to secure all three points.

For Sevilla, the defeat is another setback in what has been a turbulent season, with the club now facing mounting pressure as the relegation battle intensifies. The loss not only denies them vital points but also raises further questions about their ability to respond under pressure.

Speaking after the match, Akor Adams did not hide his disappointment, describing the result as a painful blow, especially given the team’s preparation under the new manager. “The result was a shame. It wasn’t what we had prepared with the new manager, and we have to reset and forget this result as soon as possible,” he said.

Adams emphasized the need for the squad to quickly move past the defeat and focus on upcoming fixtures, highlighting the importance of mental resilience in a challenging period. With games coming thick and fast, Sevilla cannot afford to dwell on setbacks if they are to climb out of danger.

The Super Eagles forward also addressed speculation surrounding external influences on the game, firmly stating that officiating was not to blame for the result. “We didn’t lose because of the referees, but we had several incidents that could have gone against us,” he clarified, acknowledging that while certain moments may have gone in the opposition’s favour, the team must ultimately take responsibility for the outcome.

As Sevilla regroup under new management, the pressure will only continue to grow. For Adams and his teammates, the focus now shifts to bouncing back quickly and restoring confidence before their relegation fight slips further out of control.
