Nigeria star Victor Osimhen explains why he turned down captaincy in Galatasaray’s clash against Alanyaspor
Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has revealed the heartfelt reason behind his decision to turn down the captain’s armband during Galatasaray’s 3–1 victory over Alanyaspor.
The moment unfolded in the 79th minute when captain Lucas Torreira, who had delivered a standout performance with a goal and an assist, was substituted. The armband was initially passed to ilkay Gundogan but in a gesture of camaraderie, Gündoğan offered the responsibility to Osimhen.
However, the Nigerian forward respectfully declined and handed it back, choosing not to assume the leadership role on the night.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen explained that his decision was rooted in deep admiration and respect for Gündoğan’s leadership qualities.
“İlkay is someone I respect very much, he is very valuable to me,” Osimhen said. “He is a person known worldwide. He is both calm and motivating. He is someone we can always talk to. He is very visionary.”
The striker admitted he felt it was only right for Gündoğan to retain the armband.
“When he brought me the captain’s armband, it felt strange. I gave it back so he could lead us. He helps us every time he comes into the game. He is someone who deserves love.”
Osimhen’s gesture highlighted not only his humility but also the strong unity within the Galatasaray squad. While his contributions on the pitch continue to make headlines, this act of respect off it has further endeared him to fans and teammates alike.
