Nigeria secured a spot in the final of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday evening after defeating South Africa in a tightly contested match.
The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw after four halves, was decided by a penalty shootout, with the Super Eagles emerging victorious with a score of 4-2.
According to Opta Stats network, Nigeria has now matched the record previously held solely by Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Throughout its history of participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, the Nigerian national team has won penalty shootouts on six occasions, equaling Egypt’s record.
This achievement sees Nigeria joining Egypt at the top of the table, a position that Egypt held exclusively before the current edition of the tournament.
In the previous edition, Egypt won a penalty shootout in the semifinals against Cameroon.
However, they were unable to secure the title using the same method, as they were defeated by Senegal in the final, similar to their loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 16 in the current edition.
Nigeria’s qualification for the final marks the eighth time in its history, a record surpassed only by Egypt and Ghana, who have reached the final nine times each.
