Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance to secure victory over Rwanda in the fifth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifying series on Friday afternoon.

Putting on a stellar performance, the three-time African champions cruised to a comfortable 2-0 away victory over Rwanda at the Stade Amahoro to secure maximum points, riving hopes of World Cup qualification following a sloppy start to the campaign.

The Super Eagles secured victory in the first half of the much-anticipated clash following a brace from Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen.

The on-loan Napoli attacker opened the scoring after just eleven minutes into the game before firing home the second goal of the match to snatch victory for the Super Eagles.

Despite creating scoring chances, both teams were unable to find the back of the net at the game ended 2-0 for the West African powerhouse.

Nigeria has now moved a place up in Group C after triumphing over Rwanda, accumulating six points from five matches. The crucial away victory has revived the hopes of Nigeria as they seeks to secure qualification to the biggest soccer mundial to be staged on the USA, Canada and Mexico next year.

The Super Eagles are four points behind log leaders South Africa and must maintain momentum in subsequent games to secure a place at the World Cup.

With only the top team booking an automatic slot, the West African giants must ensure victories in remaining matches to confirm their participation in the biggest soccer mundial, having missed out in the previous edition in Qatar.

Nigeria will play host to Zimbabwe in the sixth round of the 2026 World Cup, three days later and will be eyeing victory on home turf.
