Former Nigerian international goalkeeper Peter Rufai is currently in critical condition, having suffered a heart attack on Monday night. The iconic Super Eagles goalkeeper is reported to be in a deep coma and is receiving medical attention at a hospital in Lagos.
Bruce Rufai, Peter’s younger brother, confirmed the severity of the situation to the press, stating, “Peter is in critical condition in a hospital in Lagos. We urgently took him to Toki Hospital where he remains today. The doctors are trying everything they can to resuscitate him, but for the moment he is not reacting.”
The distressing news comes in the wake of another tragedy in Peter Rufai’s life, as he recently lost his 78-year-old mother a week before. Bruce Rufai expressed concern about his brother’s emotional state, revealing, “Since the death of our mother, he has had a very difficult time. He is often alone and cries. His condition worries us. We pray a lot for him.”
Peter Rufai is regarded as one of Nigeria’s legendary goalkeepers, having played a crucial role in the Super Eagles’ triumph in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). He also participated in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States and the 1998 World Cup in France. His professional career took him to clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Since retiring from professional football, Peter Rufai has been involved in running his football academy in Lagos.
