Nigeria open to Russia rematch in Africa after thrilling 3-3 draw

Nigeria have left the door open for another meeting with Russia, with Acting Deputy Secretary General of the Nigerian Football Federation Ademola Olajire revealing that a future friendly between the two nations could be staged in Africa.

The possibility emerged after the Super Eagles fought back from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against Russia at the Sovcombank Arena in Nizhny Novgorod.

The latest encounter was the second between the teams in just 16 months, continuing a growing relationship between the two national sides.

Nigeria appeared destined for defeat after falling two goals behind with only 12 minutes of normal time remaining. However, Peter Edokpolor and Akor Adams struck late to rescue a point for the three-time African champions.

NFF official leaves door open

Olajire praised Nigeria’s performance despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the squad, including injuries and other restrictions that affected the team during the international window.

“Our team played well, considering all the circumstances, injuries, and restrictions that weakened our squad,” Olajire told Sport24.

“It was a spectacular match!”

The NFF official was then asked about the possibility of Nigeria hosting Russia in a return friendly, but stopped short of committing the federation to such a fixture.

“Regarding a possible next meeting, I don’t have the authority to promise that Nigeria will invite the Russian team to a friendly match at home,” he said.

However, Olajire suggested there could still be another opportunity for the teams to meet on African soil.

“But in the future, we would consider holding such a match in Africa.”

Another comeback against Russia

Nigeria’s latest comeback against Russia follows a similar pattern from their previous meeting in June 2025.

The Super Eagles also recovered from a deficit in that encounter, with Tolu Arokodare coming off the bench to cancel out Semi Ajayi’s own goal and secure a draw.

The two matches have therefore produced six goals apiece, with Nigeria twice demonstrating their ability to respond after falling behind.

The latest draw also brought the curtain down on Nigeria’s September/October international window.

The Super Eagles opened the period with a victory over Madagascar before suffering a defeat to Guinea-Bissau. They then travelled to Russia for their final fixture, where their late fightback secured a share of the spoils.
