Nigeria legend John Obi Mikel is staunchly supporting Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta amid criticism over the club trophyless run.
The Gunners endured a trophyless campaign despite delivering an outstanding performance domestically and in the Champions League.
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League in the recently concluded campaign while making it to the last four of the Champions League.
After five years, the Spanish trainer has yet to lift a trophy for the Premier league outfit, sparking concerns about his capabilities.
But the former Chelsea midfielder believes the Spaniard should be given a final opportunity heading into the new campaign.
“Is he the man who can take them to the next level? I think he has built a very, very good team. They’re strong, they play well, the defense is solid, the midfield is good. I think he’s put together a strong side, but is he the man to take them to the next level?
The next level is winning the Premier League and the Champions League—sometimes I think a fresh voice is needed. He has been there for five or six years now, and I would give him one more year. Give him next season, but if he doesn’t succeed, I think it’s better for him to simply walk away. That means he’s not the man to get it done. Bring in someone new, someone fresh,” Obi Mikel said in an interview with talkSPORT.
