The Asisat Oshoala Academy (AOA) has appointed Lanre Vigo as its new Director, aiming to further enhance the development of women’s football in Nigeria.
Vigo, a seasoned sports management professional, brings valuable experience in youth development, football administration, and talent management.
Founded by six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, and supported by Nike, the academy is dedicated to empowering young female footballers.
It provides them with high-quality training, education, and career opportunities both in football and beyond. The goal is to create a sustainable pathway for the next generation of women’s football stars.
The academy has already made significant strides. By 2024, AOA players had received call-ups to the national team, earned scholarships, and participated in prestigious tournaments.
In 2025, the academy plans to expand its talent development programs, increase international exposure for its players, and strengthen the overall competitive framework.
Vigo’s appointment is seen as a critical step in advancing these objectives. He is the co-founder of Plug Sports, a prominent sports management agency, and the founder of Inter Lagos FC, a professional football club that reached the playoffs of the Nigerian National League in its debut season.
His leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in the continued growth and success of the academy.
“I am honored to join Asisat Oshoala Academy at this pivotal time,” said Vigo. “AOA’s mission aligns with my passion for developing young talent.
I look forward to working with Asisat and the team to enhance the academy’s programs and expand its impact.”
Asisat Oshoala expressed confidence in Vigo’s appointment, emphasizing his experience and dedication. “Lanre has a deep understanding of talent development and football administration.
His experience will be crucial in strengthening our programs and providing more opportunities for young girls in football,” Oshoala said.
With Vigo’s leadership, the academy is poised to continue focusing on its core values: training, mentoring, education, and life skills development.
These pillars are designed to ensure that young female athletes not only excel in football but also gain the confidence and life skills necessary for a successful future.
The appointment of Lanre Vigo signals a new chapter for the Asisat Oshoala Academy, one that promises to further elevate the development of women’s football in Nigeria and beyond.
