Nigeria goalkeeper debate grows as Stanley Nwabali remains without club
Nigeria’s goalkeeping hierarchy could be set for a shake-up as Stanley Nwabali remains without a club while Maduka Okoye pushes to become the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper.
The situation comes as Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle prepares to name his first squad following the recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
With the next international window approaching, questions have emerged over whether Nwabali will still be selected and whether Okoye could step into the leading role between the posts.
Nwabali has been without a club since his contract with Chippa United was terminated in February.
The goalkeeper has not featured in competitive football for several months, leaving uncertainty over his match fitness ahead of the upcoming international break.
Despite the lack of playing time, the Nigerian goalkeeper has maintained confidence about the next stage of his career. However, his current situation presents a difficult decision for Chelle as he assesses the available options for the national team.
Nigeria’s recent results have also added pressure ahead of the next squad announcement.
The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the latest FIFA World Cup and finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, outcomes that have intensified scrutiny over several positions in the squad.
One of the main beneficiaries of the uncertainty surrounding Nwabali could be Okoye. The 25-year-old goalkeeper currently plays for Udinese and has been enjoying strong individual form in Serie A.
Although Udinese have struggled for consistent results this season, Okoye’s performances have drawn attention and strengthened his case for a more prominent role with the national team.
At 25, he is widely viewed as one of the natural successors to Nwabali should the hierarchy in goal change.
Interestingly, the Udinese goalkeeper was not included in Nigeria’s squad for the most recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
He had, however, been involved earlier in the World Cup qualifying competition held in Morocco in December 2025.
Nwabali had been considered a key figure for Nigeria before that tournament, but his position came under scrutiny following the team’s semi-final defeat to the host nation during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
As Chelle prepares to reveal his next squad, the decision over who leads Nigeria’s goalkeeping department could become one of the most closely watched choices in the coming weeks.
