Nigeria faces potential AFCON setback as Benjamin Frederick suffers knee injury

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have been dealt a significant blow as defender Benjamin Frederick faces the possibility of missing the tournament due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Belgian side Dender.

The 20-year-old, on loan from Brentford, was injured during Friday’s league fixture and now requires an extended period of rehabilitation.

His condition has already forced him out of Dender’s match against Royal Antwerp, raising growing concern within the Super Eagles camp ahead of the competition, which begins on 21 December.

Frederick, who earned his first call-up to the senior national team in May, had been expected to play a key role in Nigeria’s defensive set-up.

His recent performances have heightened those expectations, particularly after his strong showing alongside Calvin Bassey in the playoff win over Gabon.

His absence would therefore pose a major setback, with Nigeria set to open their AFCON campaign on 22 December — leaving little time for any late recovery.

The young centre-back’s rapid ascent into the national team had made him one of the squad’s promising figures heading into the tournament.

However, the severity of the knee problem means his availability is now in serious doubt, and medical assessments indicate that his recovery may not be completed in time for him to take part in the month-long competition.

Nigeria, drawn in a challenging group with Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania, may be forced to consider alternative options if Frederick does not recover quickly.

Should the defender be unable to return, the federation could turn to other candidates, including Igoh Ogbu of Slavia Prague and Chibuike Nwaiwi of Wolfsberger AC in Austria, both of whom have been monitored as potential replacements.

Frederick’s injury not only disrupts coach Finidi George’s defensive plans but also interrupts what had been a crucial phase in the player’s development.

His loan spell in Belgium and his integration into the national team were viewed as important steps in his progression, and missing the continent’s biggest tournament would be a major setback for the young centre-back.

With just weeks before the team’s opening match, Nigeria now faces uncertainty in defence as the medical team continues to monitor Frederick’s condition.

The Super Eagles will hope for a swift improvement, but for now, his participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations remains in jeopardy.
