Nigeria’s national team coach, Eric Chelle, has admitted that securing Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri’s commitment to the Super Eagles will be a difficult task.
The teenage midfielder has been making headlines with his performances at Arsenal and is widely regarded as one of England’s most promising prospects.
Despite his eligibility to represent Nigeria through his heritage, Nwaneri has already played for England at youth level, making his potential switch a challenging prospect for the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
Chelle, who has been vocal about his desire to recruit players of Nigerian descent from around the world, confirmed that he is eager to bring Nwaneri into the national setup. Speaking to SCORENigeria, he revealed his plan to engage the youngster in discussions about his future.
“During my trip to England, I said I would like Nwaneri to play for Nigeria. I want the NFF to talk to him first, and then I will also speak to him,” Chelle explained.
Despite his optimism, the Nigerian coach acknowledged that convincing the Arsenal starlet to choose Nigeria over England would not be straightforward.
“It will be difficult because England will also want to call him up at the senior international level,” Chelle admitted. “But I believe I can convince him.
I will speak to him about the playing project and his role in the team once the NFF has made contact.”
Nwaneri’s rapid rise has made him a sought-after talent, and with England keen to secure his long-term commitment, Nigeria face an uphill battle in their pursuit.
His decision could have significant implications for both nations, with Nigeria hoping to add another elite young talent to their squad while England aim to retain one of their most exciting prospects.
