Nigeria is closely monitoring SC Freiburg’s rising star Noah Atubolu as questions loom over the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping future.

While Stanley Nwabali remains the current first-choice keeper following his standout performances at the last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), his recent form with South African side Chippa United has sparked debate, leading the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to consider alternatives.

Atubolu, a German-born goalkeeper of Nigerian descent, has been making waves in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, delivering a series of stellar performances that have not gone unnoticed.

The 22-year-old’s consistent displays, combined with his growing reputation as a penalty-saving expert, have strengthened calls for Nigeria to secure his services ahead of future international competitions.

A Rising Star in the Bundesliga

Atubolu’s stock has soared this season, particularly following his latest heroics in Freiburg’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

The young shot-stopper produced a crucial penalty save—his fourth consecutive in the Bundesliga—cementing his place in German football history alongside icons like Bernd Leno and Jörg Butt.

“It looked cool! I was very happy to save a penalty here, at home, in front of our supporters,” Atubolu shared after the match, his excitement clear.

His ability to read penalty takers has become a hallmark of his game. In recent seasons, Atubolu has denied spot-kicks from top Bundesliga names, including Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), Josip Juranovic and Kevin Volland (Union Berlin), and most recently, André Silva.

While his penalty-saving prowess grabs headlines, his overall calmness under pressure and sharp distribution skills have also drawn praise.

“I spend a lot of time studying the shooters and preparing myself for all situations. Of course, I have my tricks, but I’m not going to reveal them,” he said with a smile, maintaining an air of mystery around his approach.

Nigeria’s Goalkeeping Dilemma

The Super Eagles have faced ongoing challenges in solidifying their goalkeeping department. While Nwabali’s AFCON heroics elevated his status among fans, inconsistency at club level has raised doubts about his long-term role as Nigeria’s number one.

The NFF is now considering fresh talent to strengthen the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Atubolu, despite representing Germany at youth levels, remains eligible to play for Nigeria. The NFF is reportedly working behind the scenes to convince the Freiburg goalkeeper to commit to the Super Eagles, viewing him as a long-term solution to their goalkeeping concerns.

His decision could significantly shape Nigeria’s future prospects, especially with a World Cup on the horizon. The allure of becoming a central figure for the Super Eagles may weigh heavily in Nigeria’s favor, but the competition from Germany’s senior setup remains a factor.

Breaking Records and Setting Standards

Atubolu’s immediate focus remains with SC Freiburg, where he is on the verge of achieving a club milestone. Should he manage to keep a clean sheet for the next 111 minutes, he will break Freiburg’s longstanding record for the longest unbeaten run, set during the 2000-01 season.

While fans in Germany celebrate his meteoric rise, many in Nigeria are hopeful that Atubolu will soon don the green and white of the Super Eagles. His talent, composure, and knack for high-pressure saves could be the missing piece Nigeria needs as they prepare for future international tournaments.

For now, the ball is in Atubolu’s court—will he choose to represent the country of his heritage or continue pursuing his career ambitions with Germany? Nigerian fans and football officials alike wait in eager anticipation.
