Nigeria is intensifying its preparations for a vital African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign as they aim for a return to the competition after missing the last two editions. The Super Eagles B squad, who are set to face Ghana in a double-header, have gathered at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, for a rigorous training camp.
A total of 30 players have been called up for the camp, with only goalkeeper Henry Ozoemena and defender Imo Obot absent, as they are committed to Enyimba FC’s ongoing CAF Confederation Cup group-stage campaign.
Ozoemena, in particular, has impressed with his performance in Enyimba’s recent 2-2 draw against Zamalek FC, making key saves to help secure a point for his side.
The match against Ghana represents a critical juncture for Nigeria, as the team aims to secure a spot in the 2024 CHAN finals. Nigeria has previously failed to qualify for the tournament in 2009, 2011, 2021, and 2023.
However, the team has a rich history in the competition, having claimed bronze in 2014 and silver in 2018. Their 2016 campaign ended at the group stage in Rwanda.
Coaches Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ikechukwu are working tirelessly to ensure their players are ready for the challenge ahead.
The first leg against Ghana will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on December 22, marking the beginning of what could be a pivotal clash in Nigeria’s bid to return to the continental tournament.
Historically, Ghana has been a formidable opponent for Nigeria in the CHAN qualifiers. In the tournament’s inaugural edition in Ivory Coast, Nigeria took a 2-0 lead at halftime in Accra, only to lose 3-2.
The return leg in Calabar ended in a draw. In the last edition, Ghana won 2-0 at home, with Nigeria replicating the scoreline in Abuja before the Black Galaxies triumphed in a penalty shootout.
Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2021 tournament, after a heavy 4-1 loss to Togo in Lome, followed by a 2-0 victory in Lagos, further added to the urgency of this year’s campaign.
Beyond the rivalry with Ghana, the Super Eagles B squad is also driven by the desire to win back the support of Nigerian fans.
After missing out on two consecutive editions of the tournament, the team is determined to prove their worth and restore national pride.
As the match approaches, the anticipation and pressure continue to build for what promises to be a dramatic showdown.
