Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi speaks out on delayed FIFA ruling

Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi has spoken publicly about the uncertainty surrounding his team’s complaint to FIFA over the eligibility of certain players from Democratic Republic of the Congo, as the intercontinental play-off for the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.

The midfielder, who plays for Leicester City, addressed the issue amid growing anticipation over a decision from football’s global governing body.

Nigeria lodged the complaint after DR Congo secured a place in the intercontinental play-offs, raising questions over the eligibility of some players involved in the qualification process.

However, despite expectations that a verdict would be announced on 17 February, FIFA has yet to communicate an official decision on the matter.

The continued delay has left uncertainty hanging over preparations for the crucial play-off stage.

Speaking about the situation, Ndidi acknowledged the frustration surrounding the prolonged wait but stressed that the players are concentrating on matters they can control as they continue preparations with the national side, the Nigeria national football team.

When questioned about the delay, the Super Eagles captain said:

“To be honest, I don’t really focus on things I can’t control. We’re only focused on our football and preparing in the best way possible.

Of course, everyone wants clarity, but we trust the Nigerian Football Federation and the authorities to handle everything properly.

As players, our job is to stay ready, stay united, and keep working hard. Nigerian fans always expect the best from us, and we respect that. Whatever the outcome, we will continue to give our all for the country and make Nigeria proud.”

His comments reflect the position taken by the players as the dispute remains unresolved. While the administrative process continues, attention within the squad remains on maintaining readiness for the upcoming matches.

The uncertainty surrounding the case has also placed pressure on planning and mental preparation, as teams involved in the play-offs await confirmation of the final competitive landscape.

With the intercontinental play-offs forming a decisive pathway to the World Cup, clarity from FIFA is expected to determine the next steps for those involved.

For now, Nigeria’s players continue their preparations while the matter remains under review.

As the countdown to the play-offs continues, the squad awaits the governing body’s final ruling on the complaint that has added an unexpected layer of uncertainty to their World Cup ambitions.
