Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi suspended for World Cup playoff against Gabon
Nigeria will have to negotiate for victory against Gabon in the 2026 World Cup playoffs without influential defender Semi Ajayi.
The Super Eagles missed out on automatic World Cup qualification, and are set to participate in a four-nation continental playoff to determine their fate for the global showpiece next year.
The West African football heavyweights will face Gabon in the playoff semifinal on November 13, with the final slated for November 16.
Nigeria have been dealt with a massive blow, with defender Semi Ajayi expected to miss the crucial clash against Gabon due to suspension.
The 31-year-old defender received his second yellow card of the qualifying series during the 4-0 win against the Benin Republic, resulting in an automatic one-match suspension for the crucial clash.
Ajayi’s absence might significantly weaken the Super Eagles’ defence, particularly given his outstanding performances for Nigeria since recovering from injury.
Meanwhile, the highly-rated defender will be available for selection should Nigeria advance to the final.
