Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey sparks Fulham’s bid for European football

Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey has issued a confident rallying cry as Fulham pushes for a historic return to European football, insisting the dream is still very much alive despite their current mid-table standing in the Premier League.

Under the guidance of Marco Silva, Fulham currently sit 11th on the table, a position that might appear modest at first glance. However, the reality of this season’s tightly packed standings tells a different story. With just four points separating the Whites from seventh place—a spot likely to secure qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League—the margin for a late-season surge remains well within reach.

Bassey, who has been a key figure in Fulham’s defensive setup, believes the team has learned valuable lessons from previous campaigns where similar opportunities slipped through their fingers during the final stretch.

Speaking to beIN Sports, the Nigerian international admitted that consistency in the closing stages has been a challenge in recent years but stressed that this season presents a different mindset within the squad.

“If you look at the last two or three seasons, we’ve been in and around it, and then the last four or five games it’s sort of got away from us, [but] we’re right there now,” Bassey said.

With eight matches left to play, the defender emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and maximizing every opportunity, as even the smallest margins could define their European ambitions.

“We’ve got eight games left, and I feel like we can really push and achieve it. We’re four points behind seventh, so it’s all very close—that’s why each game and point matters.”

Fulham’s push for Europe reflects a broader ambition within the club to establish itself among the Premier League’s most competitive sides. Having steadily improved under Silva’s leadership, the team now finds itself at a crucial juncture where belief must translate into results.

A place in Europe would mark a significant milestone for the West London club, boosting its profile and rewarding a squad that has shown resilience and growth throughout the campaign. But as Bassey rightly points out, the margin for error is slim, and the final weeks of the season will demand both consistency and character.
