Nigeria captain William Troost Ekong has taken a swipe at former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for belittling the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Despite Mohammed Salah’s tremendous performances for Liverpool this season, the former England defender express the Egyptian star could fall short in winning the Ballon d’Or.

Carragher suggested that Salah’s ambition to be the best in the world might be hindered by playing for Egypt, saying that he lacks participation in what he termed as a “major tournament.”

In response to Carragher’s comment, Ekong, who led Nigeria to the finals of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast emphasized AFCON’s significance in world football and its role in nurturing African talent.

“Africa continues to reveal itself with new generations of talent emerging, building on legendary players who paved the way. This should be recognized and celebrated.”

Additionally, Ekong, who plies his trade in Saudi Arabia affirmed taking pride in playing at the AFCON than the Olympics or World Cup.

“Playing at the Olympics, World Cup, and three AFCONs, it’s the latter I take most pride in.”

Meanwhile, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Morocco later this year.
