Chrisantus Uche and Amas Obasogie have not joined the Nigerian national team’s training camp ahead of the Super Eagles’ international fixtures, with both players missing out for justified reasons.
The camp, led by head coach Eric Chelle, began earlier this week in preparation for a series of FIFA-sanctioned friendlies. While most of the squad have reported as scheduled, Uche and Obasogie remain absent, raising questions about their availability for upcoming matches.
Uche, currently on the books of Spanish side Getafe, has been granted leave for personal reasons. According to team sources, the midfielder is attending to pressing personal matters and is expected to rejoin the squad later in the international window. While he will not feature in Nigeria’s next game against Jamaica on 31 May, he is anticipated to be available for the fixture against Russia on 6 June.
In contrast, Amas Obasogie’s absence is due to logistical complications. The Singida Black Stars goalkeeper has encountered delays in obtaining the necessary visa documentation, making it impossible for him to travel in time for the training sessions or the initial matches. His absence has already ruled him out for the remainder of the camp, including both scheduled friendlies.
These absences come at a time when the Super Eagles are beginning to build momentum. On Wednesday, 28 May, Nigeria claimed a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over regional rivals Ghana, marking Chelle’s first win in charge of the team since his appointment.
The match served as a positive start to the FIFA window, with several players impressing and the team showing signs of cohesion under the new regime.
Despite the win, Chelle’s preparations have been somewhat disrupted by the incomplete squad. The absence of two key players—particularly a goalkeeper—presents a tactical challenge, though the coach has expressed confidence in the depth of his roster.
Obasogie’s withdrawal leaves Nigeria light in the goalkeeping department. The 24-year-old had been expected to compete for a starting spot during the camp. His absence provides an opportunity for other shot-stoppers in the squad to step up, though it remains a setback for both the player and the technical staff.
For Uche, his anticipated return ahead of the Russia match will be welcomed by the coaching team. The midfielder is seen as a dynamic presence capable of adding creativity and drive to the midfield, and his presence will be key as Nigeria continues its build-up to major competitive fixtures later this year.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not issued an official statement regarding the absences but has acknowledged that both players are excused and that no disciplinary action is being considered.
As the Super Eagles continue their preparations, the focus will shift to maintaining form and cohesion among the available squad members. The match against Jamaica is expected to serve as another test of tactical progress and squad depth under Chelle’s leadership.
With Nigeria already off to a winning start and key players expected to return in due course, the camp remains focused on building towards a strong international campaign in the months ahead.
