Nigeria-Algeria friendly set for 2 PM kickoff amid Super Falcons rebuild

The international friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Algeria’s Green Ladies will now kick off at 2 PM on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed. Initially scheduled for 4 PM, the game’s start time has been adjusted to accommodate Algeria’s travel arrangements, allowing their team to complete the match and prepare for a return flight Tuesday evening.

The NFF’s Head of International Competitions, Dayo Enebi Achor, explained, “This has necessitated us moving the match forward in order to finish the encounter early for them to prepare for their movement to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, for their return trip aboard Qatar Airways.”

This fixture, part of a pair of friendlies organized by the NFF, is part of a larger effort to support the Super Falcons’ rebuilding process.

The matches come in the wake of Nigeria’s underwhelming performance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in France, compounded by the departure of former head coach Randy Waldrum.

These games offer the Super Falcons an opportunity to regroup and test promising talents as they look to revitalize their squad.

Saturday’s opening game saw the Super Falcons claim a decisive 2-0 victory over the Algerian side, courtesy of two exceptional goals from team captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

The match, held at the Remo Stars Training Complex in Ikenne-Remo, highlighted the promise of Nigeria’s emerging players.

Among those showcasing their potential were several home-based professionals, including former U-17 stars Miracle Usani, Chioma Olise, and Goodness Osigwe, who contributed to an entertaining and dynamic performance.

Coach of the Algerian Green Ladies, Farid Benstiti, expressed optimism despite Saturday’s loss, indicating that his relatively youthful squad gained valuable insights from the encounter.

We will be much better on Tuesday.

My girls have seen and learnt a few lessons today.

We will take those lessons on board and dig our feet into the ground against the Falcons on Tuesday,” he told the NFF’s official website.

The friendly series serves as a strategic platform for the Super Falcons to recalibrate under new management and integrate fresh talent.

For the Algerian side, the fixtures offer critical experience against one of Africa’s powerhouse teams, enabling their young players to develop resilience and adaptability at an international level.

Both sides are expected to bring intensity to Tuesday’s match, with Nigeria aiming to extend their momentum and Algeria eager to challenge their hosts.

For the Super Falcons, it will be an important step in evaluating talent and refining tactics as they build toward future competitions, while the Green Ladies are expected to employ the lessons from their last encounter to present a more formidable front.
