Nigeria aims to build momentum against Zimbabwe in 2026 World Cup qualifier

Nigeria aims to build momentum against Zimbabwe in 2026 World Cup qualifier

Nigeria will look to secure back-to-back wins in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign when they take on Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

Following a difficult start to the qualifiers, the Super Eagles found their rhythm with a 2-0 victory over Rwanda last week and now seek to capitalize on that momentum.

Nigeria’s struggles and revival

After reaching the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Nigeria endured a turbulent period, failing to win any of their first four World Cup qualifying matches.

However, their recent victory against Rwanda, inspired by a brace from star striker Victor Osimhen, has injected new hope into their campaign.

Despite their slow start, the Super Eagles remain in contention in Group C, where the competition remains tight.

A win against Zimbabwe would not only bolster their standing but also reaffirm their credentials as strong contenders for a World Cup berth.

Zimbabwe’s battle at the bottom

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, find themselves at the foot of Group C but have shown signs of resilience.

In their most recent outing, the Warriors fought back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Benin, with goals from Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Marshall Munetsi and veteran forward Knowledge Musona.

While Zimbabwe’s qualifying campaign has been challenging, their spirited performance against Benin suggests they will not be an easy opponent for Nigeria.

The Warriors will be eager to cause an upset and climb off the bottom of the table.

Group C standings and match preview

As it stands, Nigeria sits fourth in Group C with six points, trailing Rwanda (7), Benin (8), and group leaders South Africa (10).

Zimbabwe, with three points, occupies the last position.

With home advantage in Lagos, Nigeria will enter the match as clear favorites.

However, Zimbabwe’s recent resilience means the Super Eagles cannot afford any complacency.

The match kicks off at 16:00 GMT, and a win for Nigeria could significantly strengthen their position in the race for a World Cup spot.
