La Liga: Ivorian international Nicolas Pépé assist seals narrow Villarreal win over Levante

Nicolas Pépé produced a moment of individual brilliance deep into stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for Villarreal against Deportivo Alavés on Friday night.

The Ivorian forward’s 98th-minute equalizer silenced the Mendizorroza crowd and denied the hosts a much-needed victory, further extending Alavés’ frustrating winless run at home to four matches.

Villarreal had struggled to find their rhythm for much of the contest, falling behind in the 40th minute after an unfortunate own goal by Rafa Marín.

As the clock ticked past the allocated six minutes of added time, it appeared the Yellow Submarine were headed for a disappointing defeat on the road.

However, Pépé, who has enjoyed a resurgence in La Liga this season, took matters into his own hands with the final meaningful kick of the game.

Latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area, the former Arsenal man unleashed a powerful, curling strike that flew into the top corner, leaving Alavés goalkeeper Antonio Sivera with no chance.

The goal sparked wild celebrations on the Villarreal bench and served as a cruel blow to Alavés manager Quique Sánchez Flores, who was minutes away from securing a debut home win.

Pépé’s intervention proved vital for Villarreal’s aspirations at the top of the table. The solitary point keeps the club firmly in third place with 55 points, maintaining a slender lead over Atlético Madrid in the race for Champions League qualification.

For the winger, the goal reinforces his status as a key protagonist in Marcelino’s tactical setup, showcasing the clinical finishing that has defined his recent form.

While the result maintains Villarreal’s momentum in the top four, it leaves Alavés hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

For Pépé, however, the night was a personal triumph, proving once again that he possesses the star quality to change the complexion of a match in a matter of seconds.
