Nicolas Dupuis sets sights on bright stars’ progress as south sudan’s coach

Nicolas Dupuis, 55, took the helm as the coach of South Sudan on October 26, 2023. This seasoned French technician, renowned for his previous coaching tenure with Madagascar, is driven by an ardent desire to propel the Bright Stars to new heights.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Dupuis sheds light on the initiation of his new role and outlines his vision for the South Sudanese national team.

The French coach shares insights into the challenges and aspirations that accompany his mission to foster football development in the young nation.

“I have already received an excellent welcome,” Dupuis affirms, reflecting on the warm reception from the South Sudanese Federation.

In a three-year agreement, the coach emphasizes his commitment to splitting his time between South Sudan and Madagascar.

Acknowledging the resource constraints within the South Sudanese football landscape, Dupuis recognizes the mix of local talents and a handful of expatriates scattered across the globe.

Undeterred by the absence of star power, Dupuis notes a palpable determination within the team to progress.

He highlights notable achievements, such as a victory against Congo (1-0) during the CAN 2023 qualifiers and a successful outing against Kenya (1-0) in a friendly match.

The overarching goal is to ascend in the FIFA rankings and cement the Bright Stars’ presence on the international stage.

Reflecting on his debut matches in November, where South Sudan faced Senegal (0-4) and Mauritania (0-0) in World Cup qualifiers, Dupuis underscores the team’s resilience.

Despite a loss to Senegal, he praises the players’ admirable response and the spirited effort against Mauritania.

With limited preparation time and expatriates joining shortly before the Senegal match, Dupuis commends the squad’s desire and mindset.

Looking ahead, Dupuis acknowledges the formidable competition in South Sudan’s group, which includes powerhouses Senegal and DR Congo.

While cautious about 2026 World Cup qualification, he expresses the team’s intent to compete well, secure points, and make strides against stronger opponents.

As South Sudan anticipates the completion of its home stadium in Juba, Dupuis emphasizes the significance of playing in front of their home crowd.

The coach hopes for a possible debut in June, providing the Bright Stars with a valuable opportunity to showcase their resilience and determination on home soil.

In navigating the challenges and aspirations of South Sudanese football, Nicolas Dupuis emerges as a dedicated mentor, steering the Bright Stars toward a promising future.

The journey has just begun, but Dupuis, with his wealth of experience, is poised to leave an indelible mark on South Sudan’s footballing landscape.
