Nico Gonzalez joins Newcastle United from Manchester City in £50m deal

Newcastle United have signed Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez on a long-term contract during the summer transfer window.

Manchester City confirmed the Spain international’s departure in an official statement, with Sky Sports reporting that Newcastle will pay £50m for the 24-year-old.

Gonzalez has been given the number six shirt and becomes Newcastle’s seventh signing of the summer.

“I am very happy to be here at this great club,” Gonzalez told Newcastle’s official website. “I have only heard good things about the club and the city, so I am really excited to live here and be part of this project.”

The midfielder joined Manchester City from Portuguese club Porto in January 2025 and spent 18 months with the Premier League side.

He made 59 appearances in all competitions during that period, scoring four goals. Gonzalez won the League Cup and FA Cup with Manchester City during the 2025-26 season.

“It has been an honour for me to be part of Manchester City,” Gonzalez said in an interview with the club’s official website. “It is difficult to understand from the outside how special this club is. The management, players, coaches, staff and fans make it truly unique.”

He added: “I learned a lot during my time here by playing alongside some of the best players and coaches.”

Gonzalez also thanked those at the club for their support during his spell in Manchester.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my team-mates, the coaching staff and the City fans who supported and helped me throughout my time in Manchester,” he said.

Gonzalez began his career in Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Valencia on loan. He then joined Porto on a permanent basis in the summer of 2023, spending a season and a half with the Portuguese club before switching to Manchester City in January 2025.

His final appearances for Manchester City came at the start of the 2025-26 campaign. He played 11 minutes as a substitute against Arsenal in the Community Shield and remained on the bench for the opening-round match against Bournemouth.

Manchester City won that game 2-1 against Bournemouth, while Newcastle United began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Gonzalez’s move brings an end to his time at Manchester City after 59 matches and four goals across all competitions. He now joins a Newcastle United side who have added him as their seventh summer recruit.
