Jordan Amavi Clarifies His Heritage, Dismisses Togolese Rumors
Jordan Amavi, the Nice left-back, has set the record straight regarding his heritage, dismissing media claims that he is of Togolese descent. In an interview with France Football, Amavi addressed the misinformation, particularly after several reports had described him as Franco-Togolese, a notion that has been circulating in the media and even among some of his colleagues.
“I’m not Togolese at all! There are media outlets there that talk about me, even Serge Gakpé asked me if I have Togolese origins… I looked into it, that’s not the case! It makes me laugh,” Amavi stated, adding that his friends often joke about the misreporting. “Every time my friends read an article presenting me as Franco-Togolese, they send me a message with the screenshot (laughs).”
While Amavi refrained from delving into the specifics of his actual origins, he was keen to emphasize his deep connection to France, specifically Toulon, the city where he was born and raised. “Toulon is my home! I was born there, I played there until 2010 before leaving for Nice. All my friends and family are in Toulon, this city is everything to me. When I’m in Toulon, I feel at home,” he explained.
Amavi’s focus on his French identity is clear, despite the confusion surrounding his background. He has spent his entire life in France and proudly considers Toulon his true home. His roots in the city, he said, are more important to him than any speculative claims about his ancestry.
The left-back also shared his pride in representing France at the international level. After signing his professional contract with Nice, Amavi was called up to the French Under-20 national team, an achievement he described as a “reward.” “Wearing the French team jersey is a reward. Being able to do it at home is even better… It’s a treat,” he added, reflecting on the honor of playing for his country in front of his home crowd.
Amavi’s remarks serve to clear up any confusion about his heritage, reinforcing his commitment to his French identity and his pride in representing the nation at the highest level.
