Newport County have completed the signing of Manchester United right-back Habeeb Ogunneye on a season-long loan ahead of the 2025–26 League Two campaign.
The 18-year-old, who is of Nigerian descent, joins the Welsh side in search of regular first-team football and valuable senior experience after progressing through the youth ranks at United.
Born in London, Ogunneye now becomes the latest Red Devils prospect to secure a temporary move away from Old Trafford.
The defender links up once again with Dave Hughes, who recently joined Newport’s backroom staff after previously serving as assistant manager for Manchester United’s Under-21 side.
Ogunneye credits Hughes as a major influence in his development and cited his presence as a key factor in deciding to join Newport.
“Once I knew Newport were interested and Dave Hughes was there then it was an easy decision for me,’’ Ogunneye told the club’s official website.
“I worked closely with him at Manchester United for two years and he is a great coach. He taught me a lot, and I have the utmost respect for him.”
Ogunneye, who trained with the Newport squad earlier this week, views the loan as a critical step in his career and is determined to make the most of the opportunity.
“It was an important decision for me because it is my first loan in senior football. I felt the time was right for me to take the step and I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” he said. “I want to play as many games as I can and help the team be successful.’’
The youngster is expected to strengthen Newport’s defensive options heading into the new season and will be aiming to earn consistent minutes as he transitions into senior professional football.
