Newcastle United are weighing a move for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa as they search for a replacement for Alexander Isak, whose future at St James’ Park remains uncertain.
The club’s pursuit comes after a series of high-profile rejections in what has been a frustrating transfer window.
Aghehowa, of Nigerian descent, and Isak, who has Eritrean heritage through his parents despite representing Sweden internationally, are at the centre of a developing saga on Tyneside.
Newcastle’s striker shortlist has dwindled after targets including Hugo Ekitike, Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Dean Huijsen and James Trafford opted for other destinations.
The latest blow came when RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko chose to join Manchester United.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Aghehowa, 21, is among a small pool of forwards Newcastle rate highly.
He scored 27 goals and registered three assists across all competitions for Porto last season.
The Portuguese champions signed him for €15 million and inserted a €100 million release clause — a sum Newcastle are reportedly prepared to meet to hasten Isak’s departure.
Isak’s exit has been the subject of protracted negotiations with Liverpool, who have tabled a £110 million bid. However, Newcastle have refused to finalise a deal until they secure a replacement.
The Swedish striker is currently training alone, having informed manager Eddie Howe he does not wish to play in the coming season for the Magpies.
While Liverpool remain ready to complete the transfer, the impasse hinges on Newcastle landing a new centre-forward. Aghehowa’s profile, age, and scoring record make him an appealing option, but no formal approach has yet been made.
With the Premier League season fast approaching, the situation places pressure on Newcastle to end their transfer struggles and resolve the future of their wantaway star.
