Newcastle mock Man United with Danish-Nigerian William Osula winner as 11-year-old Old Trafford tweet resurfaces
A decade-old social media post from Manchester United has resurfaced in dramatic fashion after William Osula struck a late winner for Newcastle United against the Red Devils, completing a moment rich in irony and football nostalgia.
The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages at St James’ Park, where Osula produced a superb late finish to hand Newcastle a 2-1 victory in a tense Premier League encounter. The win not only lifted the mood on Tyneside but also snapped a frustrating run of three consecutive home defeats.
Yet the post-match conversation quickly shifted beyond the result itself.
Shortly after the final whistle, Newcastle’s social media team delivered a playful jab at Manchester United by resurrecting a tweet the Old Trafford club had published on November 8, 2014. At the time, United had congratulated an 11-year-old Osula for winning a skills competition at Old Trafford during the club’s Soccer Schools World Skills Final.
The original message read: “Congratulations to 11-year-old William Osula from Denmark, winner of today’s MU Soccer Schools World Skills Final.” The post included a photograph of the youngster receiving his award alongside club legends Bryan Robson and Gary Pallister.
Fast forward twelve years and the same youngster was celebrating in black and white after delivering the decisive blow against the very club that once celebrated his talent. Newcastle amplified the moment by reposting the old message with the simple caption: “Time flies 😅”, a move that quickly spread across social media.
The goal itself capped a dramatic match that had already been filled with controversy. Newcastle were forced to play much of the contest with ten men after Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card from referee Peter Bankes following an incident in the penalty area where the midfielder slipped while attempting to challenge for the ball.
Bankes initially indicated a goal kick rather than awarding a foul, but Ramsey was still dismissed, a decision that sparked loud protests from the home crowd. Because the offence involved a second yellow card, VAR was unable to intervene, leaving Newcastle supporters furious as the referee was booed off at half-time.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Eddie Howe’s side refused to retreat. Anthony Gordon opened the scoring to give Newcastle the lead, before Casemiro equalised with a powerful header to restore parity for Manchester United.
With the contest appearing to drift toward a draw, Osula seized his moment. Collecting the ball late in normal time, he surged forward and finished confidently to send St James’ Park into raptures.
After the match, the young striker revealed that the decisive action was no accident, explaining that he had rehearsed the same move during training the previous day.
