New Zealand reclaim world number one ranking after decisive win over South Africa

New Zealand have returned to the top of the world rugby rankings after beating South Africa 33-16 at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The All Blacks produced a commanding performance in Johannesburg, scoring five tries to South Africa’s one. Their 17-point victory also gives them a 1-0 lead in the Greatest Rivalry Series, with three Test matches still to play.

The result was enough to move New Zealand above the Springboks in the latest rankings. The All Blacks gained 1.75 points for the margin of victory, taking their total to 94.03 points.

South Africa, meanwhile, lost 1.75 points and fell to 92.21. The Springboks had started the match as the world’s top-ranked team, but their defeat allowed New Zealand to regain the position.

New Zealand’s victory was built on their superior attacking return, with five tries compared with South Africa’s single score. The 17-point margin was also reflected directly in the ranking adjustment, strengthening the All Blacks’ position at the summit.

The opening result gives New Zealand an early advantage in the Greatest Rivalry Series, although the standings remain far from settled. With three Test matches remaining, the world number one ranking is expected to change again during the series.

Saturday’s result therefore carries significance beyond the opening contest between the two sides. It has altered the global order, placing the All Blacks back at number one while leaving the Springboks to respond in the remaining matches.

New Zealand’s lead in the series and their return to the top of the rankings mark a strong start, but their position is not secure. Further results between the All Blacks and Springboks will continue to affect the points totals and could lead to more changes before the series concludes.
