Ahmed Diab, the president of the Egyptian Professional Footballers Association, has hinted at the possibility of restructuring the Egyptian Premier League for the upcoming 2024-25 season, adopting a dual-league system akin to the Belgian league’s format introduced at the beginning of the 2009-2010 season.
Currently, the Belgian league comprises 18 teams, with the top four teams entering a championship playoff to determine the titleholder and participants in European competitions.
A significant shift in the Belgian league’s champion identity occurred at the onset of the aforementioned season, with teams resurfacing after decades, such as Royal Antwerp, which clinched the title in the previous edition, marking its first victory since the 1956-57 season.
Similarly, Gent claimed its inaugural title in the 2014-2015 season, while traditional powerhouses like Anderlecht and Club Brugge have also tasted championship success.
This augurs well for a highly competitive edition of the Egyptian Premier League, with the emergence of new contenders promising to bolster the Egyptian national football team primarily and enhance various aspects of Egyptian football.
