New Chiefs boss lays down his blueprint: Five major signs from Fernando Da Cruz’s Spain mission

Fernando Da Cruz may still be searching for his first victory as Kaizer Chiefs head coach, but the results in Spain have done little to dampen optimism around the club’s pre-season preparations.

Amakhosi have yet to win any of their opening three friendly matches, yet the performances have revealed encouraging tactical developments under the French-Portuguese coach. Rather than focusing solely on scorelines, Da Cruz has used the tour to instil a fresh philosophy and establish the foundations of the team he wants for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

With one final pre-season fixture still to come, several aspects of Chiefs’ evolving identity have already become apparent.

A return to the Chiefs way

Perhaps the most noticeable change has been Da Cruz’s commitment to possession football.

Training sessions have consistently featured high-tempo rondo drills aimed at sharpening quick passing, movement and decision-making in tight spaces. Instead of encouraging players to clear their lines under pressure, the emphasis has been on retaining possession, creating passing angles and building attacks patiently from the back.

It is a style long associated with Kaizer Chiefs’ traditional identity, and supporters will be encouraged to see signs of that philosophy returning after recent seasons in which the club often struggled to control matches.

Versatility becoming a key weapon

Another striking feature of Da Cruz’s early work has been his willingness to experiment with player roles.

Reeve Frosler has been used across multiple positions, including both full-back roles and central midfield, while Dillan Solomons has been pushed further forward on the right flank despite spending much of his career in defence.

Youngster Mfundo Vilakazi has also been deployed on the left wing rather than his usual right-sided position, suggesting the new coach values tactical adaptability and wants players capable of operating in different systems.

That flexibility could become one of Chiefs’ biggest strengths over the course of a demanding league campaign.

A more organised defensive structure

Defensively, there have also been encouraging signs.

Rather than retreating deep into their own penalty area when out of possession, Chiefs have adopted a structured mid-block designed to keep the team compact while remaining well positioned to launch counter-attacks after regaining possession.

Although the system is still a work in progress, it has provided greater balance and organisation during the Spain tour, highlighting Da Cruz’s focus on collective discipline rather than reactive defending.

Clear tactical direction emerging

Another positive has been the team’s improved organisation during matches.

Chiefs have shown greater discipline after taking the lead, maintaining their shape both with and without the ball instead of relying solely on moments of individual brilliance.

Late equalisers conceded against Rangers FC and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Kholood Club exposed areas that still require improvement, particularly concentration in the closing stages. Even so, the team’s tactical structure has remained consistent throughout the tour, suggesting players are beginning to understand the demands of their new coach.

Calm leadership amid growing challenges

Da Cruz has also impressed with his composed approach during a difficult pre-season.

His preparations have been disrupted by injuries to Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba and new signing Khanyisa Mayo, while promising defender Aden McCarthy is no longer available. Productive attacker Glody Lilepo is also expected to depart, adding further uncertainty to the squad.

At the same time, Chiefs have yet to finalise transfer moves for Langelihle Phili and Seluleko Mahlambi.

Despite those setbacks, Da Cruz has remained focused on implementing his ideas rather than allowing off-field distractions to derail preparations. His calm leadership has been one of the standout features of the Spain camp and could prove crucial as the club continues its rebuilding process.

Kaizer Chiefs will conclude their pre-season programme against Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup on Sunday, 26 July, at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.
