Memphis Depay’s fitness casts doubt on 2026 World Cup place
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has voiced growing concern over Memphis Depay’s fitness, raising doubts about the striker’s chances of featuring at the 2026 World Cup.
Depay is currently sidelined through injury and was absent from the national team’s training camp, prompting uncertainty about his condition.
His absence has become a key talking point for the Oranje, given his importance to the squad in recent years.
Speaking about the situation, Koeman confirmed the forward is not with the team in Zeist and is instead undergoing treatment elsewhere.
“No, he’s not here. He’s in the Netherlands and he’s receiving treatment here. But he’s not present. He was supposed to participate in a training session, but I haven’t seen him yet,” said Koeman.
The coach’s remarks highlight a lack of clarity over Depay’s recovery, with concerns increasing as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
His physical state has become a sensitive issue for the Dutch setup, particularly at a time when injuries have affected several players.
Koeman admitted the timing of the setback is troubling, even though the striker had previously been able to complete full matches.
“Yes, the fact that this is happening now is obviously not a good sign. Even though he played several full games before.
And if you look at the squad, several other players have had periods of injury. I’m more worried about them than the others,” he admitted.
Despite his status as the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer, Depay’s place in the squad for the 2026 World Cup is far from assured.
Koeman made clear that selection will depend entirely on match fitness and performance levels rather than past achievements.
“He must have played some matches. I’m convinced of it. We saw it during the 2024 European Championship as well. I think he must be at the top of his game,” he insisted.
Koeman also suggested he is reflecting on previous tournaments where players were included despite not being fully fit.
We had the same problem with several players back then, who, for one reason or another, weren’t at 100%. I wonder if I would make the same mistake again.
With time running towards the next World Cup, Depay now faces a critical period as he works to regain full fitness and secure his place in the national team.
