Ronald Koeman explains why he left out Jeremie Frimpong from his squad

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has defended his decision to leave Jeremie Frimpong out of his final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Frimpong, who plays for Liverpool was included in the provisional 40-man squad but failed to make the final selection despite featuring regularly for Liverpool during the season.

Koeman, after announcing his squad, explained that the decision was influenced by both form and tactical considerations, while revealing that West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville had been preferred.

“Frimpong is not physically ready,” Koeman explained. “He has suffered many injuries this season. These are technical choices, and I preferred other players in this position who are better in terms of readiness.”

The Dutch coach stressed that while Frimpong remains a talented option, his recent injury struggles made it difficult to guarantee consistency at the highest level. With the World Cup requiring players to perform at peak condition across multiple intense matches, Koeman opted for alternatives who have demonstrated greater durability throughout the season.

He further clarified that the decision is not permanent, leaving the door open for the player’s return in future international windows if he regains full fitness and regular club football.

“It is a very difficult stage,” Koeman added, “but the doors are open in the future for Frimpong, provided he regains his physical strength and participates consistently with his club.”

Frimpong’s omission comes after a disrupted campaign marked by recurring hamstring issues that affected his availability and consistency. While he still managed a notable number of appearances, his lack of sustained match rhythm ultimately worked against him in Koeman’s selection process.

The Netherlands will now proceed with their World Cup preparations without one of their more dynamic wide defensive options, as Koeman finalises his plans for a Group F campaign that includes Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia.
