Napoli confirm successful heart procedure for Scott McTominay, with return expected in two weeks

Napoli have confirmed that Scott McTominay underwent successful heart surgery on Tuesday morning to treat a minor disorder affecting his cardiac rhythm.

The 29-year-old Scotland international will now rest for two weeks before returning to training, according to the Italian club.

McTominay’s procedure was carried out using PFF technology and was described by Napoli as having been completely successful. The midfielder is expected to begin his recovery immediately, with his rehabilitation period meaning he will miss a number of important fixtures for the club.

Napoli have confirmed that McTominay will be unavailable for their Serie A matches against Inter, Bologna and Fiorentina. He will also miss their Champions League meeting with Arsenal.

The midfielder has already played in two of Napoli’s matches this season, against Genoa and Como, before undergoing the operation.

McTominay joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and quickly became an important member of the team. His first season in Italy ended with major honours, as Napoli won the Serie A title in the 2024-25 campaign.

He also helped the club win the Italian Super Cup and was named Italy’s Player of the Year in 2025.

Napoli’s announcement provides an initial timeline for McTominay’s return, with the player due to resume training after two weeks of rest. His availability for matches following that period will depend on his recovery and the club’s assessment after he returns to work with the squad.

The operation was required to address a minor problem with the heart’s rhythm system. Napoli did not provide any indication of further complications and stated that the procedure had been successful.

McTominay moved to Napoli after leaving Manchester United in 2024. Since then, he has added domestic silverware and individual recognition to his career, including the Serie A championship and the Italian Super Cup last season.

His absence will therefore deprive Napoli of a player who featured in their opening matches of the current campaign. The club’s immediate schedule includes the Serie A fixtures against Inter, Bologna and Fiorentina, as well as the Champions League game against Arsenal.

For now, McTominay’s recovery will consist of a two-week period of rest before he is permitted to resume training. Napoli have not announced a more specific date for his return to competitive action, but the club’s statement confirms that the surgery itself was successful.
