Napoli are closing in on the signing of Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić in a move that could see them edge out Manchester United in the race for a potential replacement for Andre Onana.
The 28-year-old Serbian international has been strongly linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, with United reportedly considering their options following a series of high-profile errors from current No.1 Andre Onana.
Despite his strong shot-stopping abilities, Onana’s performances have come under scrutiny, prompting the club to explore alternatives.
Milinković-Savić, who enjoyed a standout season with Torino, had emerged as a leading candidate to step in should United decide to make a change in goal.
However, the Premier League side now appear set to miss out, with Napoli in advanced talks to secure his services for a reported fee of €21 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that the deal is close to completion, with Napoli manager Antonio Conte keen to bring the experienced goalkeeper into his squad as the club reshapes its roster ahead of the new Serie A season.
As part of the negotiations, Cyril Ngonge is expected to move to Torino on loan.
Milinković-Savić’s potential arrival in Naples marks a significant step in Conte’s bid to reinforce key positions in his team.
The deal, if finalised, would also represent a blow to Manchester United, who may be forced to look elsewhere should they press ahead with plans to replace Onana.
Leeds United, recently promoted back to the Premier League, were also reportedly monitoring Milinković-Savić as they seek to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
However, Napoli’s swift action looks to have beaten both English clubs to the signing.
