Two players from French second-tier club Nancy have been placed in pre-trial detention over allegations relating to a group rape, with a judicial investigation continuing into the case.
The pair were detained by security services last Wednesday after investigators questioned several people connected with the allegation, according to French newspaper L’Est Republicain. They appeared before an investigating judge on Friday and were formally informed that a judicial investigation had been opened into an alleged group rape.
Francois Capin-Dolhoste, the public prosecutor, said the judge responsible for decisions on detention ordered the players to remain in custody, following a request from prosecutors.
The judicial authorities have not released further details, citing the confidentiality of the investigation and the need to ensure that the legal process can continue properly. The identities of the players have also not been made public.
The case emerged during the international break, meaning details have received relatively limited attention while the investigation continues.
Nancy issued a statement confirming that it had been informed of the detention of two players from its reserve team in connection with an alleged rape case.
“Nancy is fully aware of the seriousness of these events and will co-operate with the judicial authorities when necessary,” the club said.
The club added that it would wait for the court’s decision before taking any action against the two players involved. It also said it would make no further comment at this stage.
Nancy are sixth in the French second division under manager Oswald Tanchot. The club are competing for promotion and seeking a return to the top flight, but the legal proceedings have now taken place during a key period of the season.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the authorities have not disclosed further information about the circumstances of the allegation.
