MUSTAPHA ZITOUNI: A FRANCO-ALGERIAN LEGEND HAS LEFT US!

220px Mustapha Zitouni
Mustapha Zitouni, one of the standout central defenders of French football in the 1950s, passed away yesterday at the age of 86 in Nice. His legacy is marked by his contributions to the early success of AS Monaco, where he played a pivotal role.

His international career with France came to an end when he, along with eleven other professional players, left France clandestinely for Tunisia. In Tunisia, an Algerian FLN team was formed during the years of the Algerian War of Independence, and Zitouni played a significant role, participating in around a hundred matches. Later, he appeared in the first selections of independent Algeria, concluding his playing career at RC Kouba.

Zitouni had a brief coaching career, working with several clubs in Algeria and Libya before settling in Nice, where he contributed to Air Algérie. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Nice, at the eastern cemetery.

Playing career:

  • Stade français (France)
  • 1953-1954: AS Cannes (France)
  • 1954-1958: AS Monaco (France)
  • 1958-1962: FLN
  • 1964-1967: RC Kouba Algeria (player-coach)

Prize list:

  • French international in 1957 and 1958 (4 caps)
  • Algerian international in 1963 and 1964 (7 caps)
  • Finalist of the Algerian Cup in 1966 with RC Kouba

Mustapha Zitouni’s impact on the sport and his involvement in the Algerian War of Independence mark a significant chapter in football history. May he rest in peace.
