Mustapha Hadji: “Hakim Ziyech determined to play AFCON for Morocco”

Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech’s move to Qatari side Al-Duhail has sparked debate over his future with the Moroccan national team, but former Atlas Lions legend Mustapha Hadji remains optimistic about the winger’s ambitions.

The 31-year-old, who recently parted ways with Galatasaray, is determined to represent Morocco at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil.

Ziyech Seeks Revival After Galatasaray Exit

Ziyech’s departure from Galatasaray was confirmed on Wednesday, ending a turbulent period in Istanbul following a strong 2023/24 campaign.

The playmaker swiftly secured a move to Qatari league leaders Al-Duhail, where he will work under French coach Christophe Galtier and don the number 93 shirt.

The decision to leave European football has raised questions about his international prospects, but Hadji has defended Ziyech’s choice, insisting that it was made with his career in mind.

“It’s his personal choice. I’m in no position to tell you whether it’s a good choice or not.

He’s a great guy, he knows what’s good for him, for his career,” Hadji told Afrik-Foot.

“He wants to get back on track, he’s very professional. He wants to get back into shape because he wants to play this African Cup at home. He needs playing time. I hope it goes well for him.”

AFCON Dream Still Within Reach

Despite not featuring for Morocco since September, Ziyech’s hopes of playing at AFCON remain alive, according to Hadji.

The former African Footballer of the Year believes the Chelsea loanee still has a key role in coach Walid Regragui’s squad, but ultimately, the decision rests with the national team boss.

“Can he participate in the AFCON? Yes! I hope so,” Hadji said. “He is a player who has proven himself, he is an essential element in Walid Regragui’s system, a leader of men.”

However, the former Moroccan international acknowledged that Ziyech’s inclusion would depend on his performances in Qatar and whether Regragui still sees him as part of his plans.

“But as I told you, I am not in the coach’s head, it is up to him to make the decision.

Is he counting on him or not? Will he find his best level? On this point, I have no doubts,” Hadji added.

“He is a revenge seeker, he is a professional and he knows that this is his last dance.

He finally wants to win this African Cup of Nations with his country, in his country. I think that is close to his heart.”

With other Moroccan internationals such as Yassine Bounou and Soufiane Rahimi continuing to receive call-ups despite playing in the Gulf, Ziyech’s AFCON dream is still very much in his hands.

His challenge now is to secure regular game time and prove he deserves a place in Morocco’s squad for the continental showpiece.
