Moussa Ndiaye aims for World Cup selection

Senegalese defender Moussa Ndiaye has set his sights on the 2026 World Cup after an impressive second half of the season with FC Schalke 04, while insisting his focus remains on consistent performances at club level.

The 22-year-old left-back played a key role as Schalke secured promotion to the Bundesliga and claimed the second division title, a run of form that has strengthened his case for a return to the Senegal national team.

His recent displays have placed him back in contention, but Ndiaye remains measured in his expectations.

Speaking in an interview, the former RSC Anderlecht academy product acknowledged his ambition to represent his country on football’s biggest stage, while recognising the competitive nature of international selection.

“Every player dreams of playing in a World Cup. But now, there’s a coach who has to make choices.

He has to put together his squad and therefore leave some players out. If it were up to me, I would select myself,” he said.

Despite his aspirations, Ndiaye emphasised that his priority is to continue delivering strong performances on the pitch rather than focusing solely on selection.

He believes that sustained effort and consistency remain the most effective way to earn recognition.

“Personally, I simply try to give my best on the field, to be as effective as possible in my position, to stay focused, and to let the coach make his choices,” he explains.

The defender is also aware of the intense competition within Senegal’s squad, where multiple players are vying for limited positions.

That depth, he admits, makes selection decisions particularly challenging for the coaching staff.

“In Senegal, the competition is fierce at almost every position, so choosing isn’t easy. Those who aren’t selected will inevitably be disappointed.

We leave everything in the hands of the coach and his staff so they can make the best choices for Senegal,” he continued.

Ndiaye’s recent progress reflects a player determined to balance ambition with realism.

While the World Cup remains a clear objective, his approach underlines a commitment to steady development rather than short-term expectations.

As he prepares for the next phase of his career in the Bundesliga, his performances at club level are likely to play a decisive role in shaping his international future.

For now, Ndiaye remains focused on his form, aware that continued consistency could open the door to representing Senegal on the global stage.
