Mouloudia Algiers were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against USM Khenchela in a match dominated by controversial VAR decisions and a standout performance from goalkeeper Litim.
The result sees MCA drop crucial points at home, missing an opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Eventful first half marked by penalty drama
The match started with controversy as early as the 10th minute when Tabti’s shot was parried by Litim, only for Bayazid to be struck in the head by a high boot from USMK’s Congolese defender, Ngolo Samangua.
After consulting VAR, the referee awarded a penalty to MCA.
However, Litim produced an excellent save to deny Bayazid.
Moments later, MCA thought they had taken the lead when defender Ghazala found the net, but once again, VAR intervened to disallow the goal for an offside infringement.
Despite the setbacks, MCA continued pressing, and just before halftime, they were awarded another penalty after Touki fouled Naidji in the box.
Bouras stepped up, but Litim was once again the hero, making his second penalty save of the night to keep USMK in the match.
MCA take control but USMK stage late comeback
MCA finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Menezla headed home a well-delivered free-kick from Helaimia.
VAR briefly reviewed the goal but confirmed it stood.
MCA doubled their advantage in the 75th minute when Bangoura, after a brilliant solo run from midfield, calmly slotted past Khedairia, who had replaced the injured Litim.
However, the visitors were not finished. Halaimia’s challenge on Boumechra inside the box led to yet another VAR review, resulting in a penalty for USMK.
Substitute Djaouchi converted from the spot in the 85th minute, setting up a tense finale.
Deep into stoppage time, Bakir found space inside the MCA box and delivered a pinpoint cross for Djaouchi, who dived to head in his second goal, completing the comeback.
VAR takes center stage
In total, the referee consulted VAR six times throughout the match, including a final review in stoppage time when MCA appealed for a penalty following a challenge by Khedairia.
However, the referee dismissed their claims, confirming the final 2-2 scoreline.
The result means MCA miss out on extending their lead over their title rivals, leaving the race for the championship wide open.
