Mosimane urges Mofokeng to add goals to his growing influence for Bafana Bafana

Pitso Mosimane has challenged Relebohile Mofokeng to focus on scoring more goals after the 21-year-old inspired Bafana Bafana to a 5-0 win in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Mofokeng produced a decisive display, scoring in the 19th minute and again in first-half stoppage time to put South Africa in control.

Sphephelo Sithole made it 3-0 seven minutes after the interval, while Iqraam Rayners added a fourth in the 63rd minute. Substitute Luther Singh completed the emphatic victory with a stoppage-time goal.

Mosimane, who has recently taken over as Bafana Bafana head coach, gave Mofokeng a starting role after the winger had been introduced more cautiously under former manager Hugo Broos.

The Sharpeville-born player has also made an impression in Europe since joining Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League, and Mosimane said his recent performances had confirmed his ability at club and international level.

“Rele is a top player; he’s showing why he’s gone to Europe… and he’s scoring, by the way, in Europe. He’s not only scoring for us, but he’s also been scoring,” Mosimane said at his post-match news conference.

“So it’s good we have Rele back with us, and the most important thing is that Rele must score goals. We know what he can do with the ball; he is a magician.

“But this is what I was telling him: that he needs to score goals. Number 10s score goals. Being a number 10 is not just about playing between the lines.”

Mosimane also praised Mofokeng’s natural understanding of the game and said the midfielder did not need extensive instruction to display his talent.

“But he is very intelligent; you don’t teach him anything. It’s just God’s gift. What a player,” he added.

The coach will now want the reigning PSL Footballer of the Year to maintain his form as Bafana Bafana prepare for their next assignment.

South Africa will conclude their current international camp in Cairo with a friendly against Egypt on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The match will be played at the Cairo International Stadium.

The fixture will provide Mofokeng with another opportunity to build on his two-goal performance and demonstrate the attacking qualities Mosimane believes he can develop further.
