Morocco vs. South Africa: Youssef En-Nesyri eyes breaking AFCON record

Morocco’s national team is gearing up to face South Africa in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, currently underway in Ivory Coast.

Having secured qualification by topping Group C with seven points, including wins against Tanzania and Zambia and a draw against DR Congo, Morocco faces South Africa, who secured second place in Group B with four points, beating Namibia, losing to Mali, and drawing with Tunisia.

Youssef En-Nesyri, the striker for Morocco and Sevilla FC, aims to break the national team’s record in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Requiring just one goal in the upcoming match, En-Nesyri aims to equal Ahmed Faras, the legendary Moroccan forward, in the historical goal-scoring charts for the national team in the tournament.

En-Nesyri has netted five goals across four different editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Faras scored six goals in only two editions, in 1972 and 1976 when Morocco clinched its first and only title in the competition.

If En-Nesyri scores a single goal against “Bafana Bafana,” he will surpass Morocco’s record in the Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the all-time top scorer for the national team in the tournament.

En-Nesyri stands out as one of the key players for Morocco in recent times, and his role is anticipated to be crucial in leading the team to further stages in the championship.
