Morocco U17 coach Thiago Pereira highlights mentality as key to AFCON success
Morocco U17 head coach Thiago Pereira Lima has stressed that his players’ mental strength will be decisive in their quest to win the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The tournament, which will be hosted in Morocco from May 13 to June 2, has generated huge expectations around the national U17 side, commonly known as the “Cubs,” following their impressive performances during the qualification campaign.
Although the Moroccan technical staff have already completed most of the tactical and technical preparations, Pereira believes the biggest challenge now lies in preparing the players psychologically for the pressure that comes with playing in front of home supporters.
Speaking to the official website of the Moroccan football federation, the Portuguese coach explained that the players are already tactically prepared and understand their responsibilities on the pitch.
“The main focus right now is on the mental aspect, because the players are tactically ready and are well aware of what is required of them on the field,” Pereira said.
The coach acknowledged the special pressure attached to competing on home soil, especially with supporters expecting this talented generation to fight strongly for the title. However, he insisted that the backing of the fans should serve as motivation rather than a burden.
“Playing on our home ground gives us great enthusiasm, and our goal is to gain the fans’ trust from the beginning,” he added.
Pereira also addressed the physical condition of his squad, noting that the competition arrives at the end of a demanding football season where several young players have accumulated fatigue and minor injuries.
“It is normal for some players to feel fatigued or suffer from minor injuries, but we are working to ensure the team is physically ready for the opening match,” he explained.
The Portuguese tactician further admitted that working with national teams presents unique difficulties due to the limited preparation time available compared to club football. He revealed that the coaching staff have therefore relied on intensive and comprehensive sessions covering tactical, physical and technical elements within a short period.
Morocco national under-17 football team will begin their continental campaign with a highly anticipated clash against Tunisia national under-17 football team on Wednesday at Moulay Hassan Stadium.
Morocco’s final squad consists of 26 players drawn from the prestigious Mohammed VI Football Academy, domestic clubs and several young professionals currently developing in top European academies, strengthening the belief that the hosts are among the favourites to lift the continental trophy.
