Morocco, Spain, and Portugal have officially declared their candidacy to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, aiming to strengthen the global profile of women’s football through a landmark joint bid.
The announcement was made by Rafael Louzán, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), during an event in Madrid dedicated to women’s sports.
“We want Spain to host the Women’s World Cup in 2035, together with Portugal and Morocco,” he stated.
A Vision for Women’s Football
This bid forms part of a broader effort to enhance the visibility and development of women’s football. Louzán emphasized the significance of such an event, saying, “There is no better way to promote women’s sport than by organizing the most important tournament in world football.”
A Historic Partnership
Having already secured the rights to co-host the men’s 2030 FIFA World Cup, the three nations are now seeking to extend their collaboration to the women’s competition.
The RFEF views Morocco and Portugal as key strategic allies in strengthening its bid against other contenders, including the United States, which has already expressed interest in hosting the 2031 edition.
Morocco, a rising force in international football, is also set to stage the Africa Cup of Nations finals this year and again in 2026. Meanwhile, Jorge Vilda’s Atlas Lionesses are eager to claim their first-ever continental title in women’s football.
A Bid Gaining Momentum
Spain is spearheading the initiative, branding it as the “World Cup of Equality.” Should the bid succeed, it would provide an unprecedented platform for women’s football while reinforcing the three nations’ commitment to fostering gender equality in sport.
The proposal is gathering momentum, with stakeholders hopeful that their vision will leave a lasting impact on the global game.
