Morocco stalwart defender Nayef Aguerd is racing against time to be fit for the impeding 2026 World Cup tournament to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Per reports, Morocco’s medical staff are working tirelessly to accelerate the recovery of the Olympique de Marseille defender, who has been sidelined following surgery for a persistent sports hernia earlier this year.

Aguerd, widely regarded as one of the defensive pillars of the Atlas Lions, underwent the procedure in March after struggling with a lower abdominal injury that had threatened to derail his season. Since then, his rehabilitation has been closely monitored, with the urgency now heightened by the fast-approaching global tournament.

Despite the setback, the 28-year-old has still managed to contribute significantly at club level since his move from West Ham United to Marseille in the last transfer window. He has featured in 16 Ligue 1 matches, scoring once, while also making five appearances in the UEFA Champions League and featuring in domestic cup competition—demonstrating both his resilience and importance when fit.

For Morocco, however, the stakes are far greater. Drawn into a daunting Group C alongside global heavyweights Brazil national football team, as well as Scotland national football team and Haiti national football team, the Atlas Lions know they will need their strongest defensive core to stand any chance of progressing.

Aguerd’s composure, aerial strength, and tactical intelligence make him a central figure in Morocco’s backline. His potential absence would be a significant blow, forcing the coaching staff to rethink their defensive structure at the worst possible time.

As preparations intensify, all eyes remain on Aguerd’s recovery timeline. Whether he can regain full fitness in time could prove decisive not only for his own tournament hopes but also for Morocco’s ambitions on the world stage.
