Morocco receive major injury boost before quarter-final against France
Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi has received a major boost ahead of his side’s World Cup quarter-final against France after defender Chadi Riad moved closer to full fitness.
Reports from sources close to the Moroccan national team suggest the Crystal Palace centre-back is recovering well and could be available for Thursday’s highly anticipated clash with the reigning world champions.
Concerns had emerged over Riad’s condition after the injury he sustained during Morocco’s previous encounter against the Netherlands earlier in the tournament.
The Moroccan medical and technical staff later decided against risking the defender during the Atlas Lions’ victory over Canada.
Final decision yet to be made
Despite the encouraging signs surrounding his recovery, a final decision on Riad’s participation against France national football team will only be made closer to kick-off.
Both the medical department and coach Ouahbi are expected to carefully assess the defender’s fitness before confirming whether he can start in Boston.
Riad has become one of the key figures in Morocco’s defensive structure during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, producing a series of strong performances that have helped the North African side reach the quarter-finals.
Morocco continue historic World Cup journey
Morocco head into the meeting with France carrying the hopes of African football as they seek a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Atlas Lions have impressed throughout the competition with their defensive organisation, discipline and resilience, qualities that will again be crucial against a France side led by captain Kylian Mbappé.
A fully fit Riad would provide a significant boost for Morocco as they attempt to contain one of the most dangerous attacking teams remaining in the World Cup
