Morocco poaches Real Madrid talent coach in relentless pursuit of excellence

Morocco’s football renaissance continues to gather remarkable momentum. Fresh off their FIFA U-20 World Cup triumph and still basking in the glory of their historic 2022 World Cup semifinal run, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has made yet another bold move in its quest for sustained excellence.

Spanish coach Abián Perdomo, a seasoned figure who has spent the past 13 years shaping talent at Real Madrid, has officially joined the Moroccan national setup in a senior technical capacity.

According to Marca, the Canary Islands-born strategist – formerly Real Madrid’s Head of Training and Methodology – will work closely with Fathi Jamal, the FRMF’s technical director and one of Moroccan football’s most respected figures.

Perdomo’s appointment forms part of Morocco’s long-term vision to strengthen its technical and developmental framework, ensuring the nation’s continued rise as a global football powerhouse rather than just a continental contender.

Perdomo arrives with an impressive résumé. During his tenure at Valdebebas, he played a pivotal role in refining Real Madrid’s youth development philosophy and bridging the gap between the academy and the senior team.

He was instrumental in grooming young talents such as Nico Paz and served on Carlo Ancelotti’s backroom staff during Real Madrid’s 2021–22 La Liga and UEFA Champions League-winning season.

His prior experience with Atlético Madrid’s academy further enriches his understanding of Spain’s most advanced player development systems.

By securing Perdomo’s expertise, the FRMF is reinforcing its commitment to building a sustainable football ecosystem.

Alongside Fernando da Cruz and Óscar Garro, he will focus on enhancing grassroots development and cultivating local talent, reducing reliance on European-born players of Moroccan descent.

With the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, Morocco’s intentions are crystal clear: the Atlas Lions are building not just for today, but for a future where they remain firmly among football’s global elite.
