Morocco national team eyes reinforcements for redemption after AFCON 2023 disappointment

Morocco national team eyes reinforcements for redemption after AFCON 2023 disappointment

Morocco’s national football team, led by coach Walid Regragui, is gearing up for a revamp, anticipating significant changes in its squad. Disappointment loomed large as the Atlas Lions, despite being considered favorites, faced an early exit in the Round of 16 against South Africa.

Coach Walid Regragui, who expressed his ambition to secure an AFCON victory and even pledged to resign if the team failed to reach the semi-finals, faced scrutiny for tactical and personnel choices during the tournament.

Despite the disappointment, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) decided to retain confidence in Regragui for the upcoming football cycle, including the AFCON in 2025, to be hosted in the country.

As Morocco prepares for the international window in March with fixtures against Mauritania and Angola, strategic decisions and changes are anticipated in the squad.

Notably, highly sought-after talent Brahim Diaz is reportedly on the verge of confirming his commitment to the Moroccan national team.

The Real Madrid player, enjoying an impressive season, has expressed his willingness to don the Moroccan jersey, a move that could bolster the team’s attacking prowess.

Another potential addition to the squad is Eliesse Ben Seghir, a promising talent from AS Monaco, who had previously indicated his intent to represent Morocco.

Finalizing details, the young Monegasque talent may find a spot in Walid Regragui’s final selection.

In a bid to strengthen the midfield, Neil El Aynaoui from Lens could also make his appearance in March, providing a much-needed boost in the playmaking department.

However, the anticipated changes in the squad may also result in notable exclusions. Selim Amallah, who faced criticism for his performance in the AFCON, and Sofiane Boufal are expected to be absent from Regragui’s call-up.

As Morocco undergoes a transitional phase, the looming international window could serve as a crucial testing ground for the team’s renewed strategies and emerging talents, marking a pivotal moment in its quest for redemption and future success.
