The president of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, is set to hold talks about Hakim Ziyech’s retirement from international football.
AfricaSoccer has revealed that the former Chelsea and Ajax winger could announce his retirement from playing for the Atlas Lions should he be dropped from the squad for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania.
“Lekjaa discussed the Ziyech file with Walid Regragui, the coach of Morocco, more than once, and how to deal with the Atlas Lions star, and the repercussions of his position and the extent of its impact on the calm within the group before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations,” a source said.
Ziyech was dropped from Moocco’s last call-up after losing his place in his former club, Galatasaray, before joining Qatari side, Al-Duhail.
He has, however, struggled for game time.
Ziyech’s last appearance with Morocco dates back to last June, during the Congo match in the World Cup qualifiers, and he expressed his anger after being substituted, which caused tension with head coach Walid Regragui.
