Former Algeria international Karim Matmour has tipped Morocco as strong favourites to claim their second Africa Cup of Nations title at next month’s tournament in Ivory Coast.
In the wake of the Atlas Lions’ historic World Cup semi-final run, Matmour backed Morocco to channel that momentum into continental glory.
“Although several teams seem contenders, I believe Morocco has the greatest chance of being crowned African champions after their exceptional World Cup performance,” said Matmour.
However, the retired midfielder stressed that the AFCON poses an entirely different proposition to the global spectacle Morocco lit up.
“The African Cup is totally different from the World Cup,” noted Matmour regarding the distinct challenge.
Morocco kick-off their Group C campaign against Tanzania on January 17th in San Pedro.
They then face DR Congo and Zambia as they aim to top the section.
With manager Walid Regragui having revitalised the squad with a discernible philosophy and discipline, Morocco breezed through World Cup qualifying before their memorable Qatar heroics.
They also boast a talented blend of youth and experience, led by Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi.
Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech and Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou provide further elite quality.
AFCON 2021 ended in last-16 heartbreak for Morocco. But by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, they have set a new benchmark.
Matmour believes Regragui’s transformed unit must now back up their credentials on the continental stage in Ivory Coast next month.
