Morocco defender Romain Saiss undergoes successful surgery after ankle injury

Morocco captain Romain Saiss has been ruled out of action after suffering a severe ankle injury during training.

The 34-year-old defender, currently playing for Qatari club Al-Sadd SC, required surgery, which was performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Pieter D’Hooghe.

Providing an update on Instagram, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star reassured fans, simply stating: “Surgery done. Al Hamdolillah.”

This marks another tough setback for the Atlas Lions’ leader, who played a pivotal role in Morocco’s historic 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign.

His tournament ended in heartbreak, as he was stretchered off in tears during the quarterfinal against Portugal due to a hamstring injury.

A key figure in Morocco’s defense with 70 international caps, Saiss has also endured multiple injury struggles throughout his career, including recurring thigh problems during his time in the English Premier League with Wolves.

Although his recovery timeline remains uncertain, Saiss is now expected to miss Morocco’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania in Matchday five and six.
